re Motor speed control

The answer is No - a dimmer operates by chopping up the a.c. waveform to allow less power through to the light. This still leaves the 50Hz frequency component of the waveform. Since the speed of an standard a.c. motor is governed by the frequency - the action of the dimmer will not affect the speed. There are a.c. motor speed control circuits but these use different techniques.
