555 Timer and LEDs

Ok here is my problem. What i want to do is use the 555 timer to flash LED's. I am really new to soldering and Electronics and tried understanding schematics but it just makes my head hurt. I'll explain better so it makes sense. I have a R/C Truack with a school bus bady on it. What i want t odo is have the 555 timer flash 4 Yello LED's and 4 Red Leds like a school bus dropping kids off. Can anyone tell me what to buy and maybe tell me an indepth solution to my problem as in "Connect this to this and that to that". Also can 1 555 IC flash multiple LED's? or do i need a dual 555 IC? Also i want to be able to figure out the flash rate. I don't know what LED's i will end up buying and i also read about resistors determining the flash rate "clueless". Hope i didn't confuse anyone else in this process. If you can help me or need to contact me for more info to help feel free "Admin@roughriderzrc.com".

Thanks for the help.
